The Junior School equips girls, aged 4-11 years, with the basic skills on which later academic work will depend, while at the same time fostering creativity and enjoyment. The girls are encouraged to work both independently and in co-operation with others.
From September 1991, the intake at 4+ increased to a two-form entry and substantial additional accommodation was opened in September 1993. Teaching is by a combination of formal and informal methods, work being tailored to individual needs, particularly in the early stages. The curriculum is structured to ensure continuity and each pupil's progress is carefully monitored, with close and frequent consultation between staff and parents.
Subjects taught include English, French, Mathematics, History, Geography, Religious Education, Drama and Music with Science, Technology, Art, Craft and Physical Education being taught in specialist accommodation. Information Technology is taught across the curriculum and PSHE is being more formally introduced. A new Music wing is planned for next year.
Various clubs are offered and where appropriate, older juniors join the extra curricular activities on the main school site. Field trips and holidays are organised.
The main entry is at 4+: all candidates are invited to an activity morning and in individual interview, no formal knowledge being expected of the very young children. Applicants for occasional vacancies at other ages are tested and/or interviewed according to age.
Girls in the Junior School take advantage of the continuous education offered by transfer to the Senior School at 11+, following the Entrance Examination in January: scholarships open to all are awarded on the results.
